How Deloitte built a leading Sports Business practice with thought leadership

By Tim Prizeman, Director - Kelso Consulting (Public Relations agency)

Football accounts report delivers 23 years' of success for Deloitte

Today Deloitte has the UK's premier sports business consultancy.  But once upon a time it had no such practice - until three of its accountants decided to combine their professional passion with their interest in sport.

Twenty years on, Deloitte advises the top names in sport across a wide range of financial and business issues.

How was this success achieved?  A huge part of its success is due to the thought leadership initiative undertaken at the start looking at the finances of the top football teams.

Yet it nearly didn't happen, with the initiative needing to withstand legal threats and internal opposition right from the outset.  At the time it grabbed the attention of football club owners and finance directors.

Now in its 23rd year, it still ensures that Deloitte and football finance are almost synonomous.

It is a great story about how accountancy firms can create industry-leading practices through innovative marketing, and the lessons from it apply just as much today.

It comes from the new book The Thought Leadership Manual, which is full of useful advice for accountants looking to stand out against their competitors and build themselves a leading practice too.
