2020: A year of opportunity for legal tech businesses

Why 2020 will be a pivotal year for lawtech companies with legal trade press

The coming year will present an opportunity for legal tech companies to build their profile and credibility through the legal trade press and awards,  particularly now as mot law firms have firmly realised they need to keep investing in making technology work for the profession.

As we discussed on the recent Kelso webinar for lawtech firms (click here to register for the next one), private practice firms are under pressure from clients to invest in technology

 that delivers real customer value. This presents an opportunity for legal tech suppliers trying to break into the lucrative legal market, with firms on the lookout for innovative suppliers.

Legaltech awards

For instance, BT Group general counsel for technology and transformation's Chris Fowler told Legal Week last month, “Sometimes law firms get a hard time when talking about technology. But it’s noticeable to me that there are some law firms that are very much looking to embrace new technology and forefront innovation within their firms to give their clients the best service.”

The Lawyer’s own research reached similar conclusions, with 87% of respondents agreeing that tech investment will boost revenue because it enables firms to offer a better service.


Getting in the legal media in 2020

With the focus on how firms can improve services, legal tech suppliers have the opportunity to build relations not just with lawyers but also the legal press which is clearly taking an interest in this fast-moving area.  However, legal technology reporting tends to focus on the latest trends enveloping the profession and suppliers have to work hard to get a mention even if they are helping set those trends.

That said, as reporters look more closely at legal technology they do want relations with suppliers to get the inside track on what is happening in the profession. Technology will become a central theme in 2020 and that means legal tech suppliers are in the spotlight.

While getting a meeting with a reporter could be a challenge without a prior relationship, there are other ways to raise your profile. Attending industry events, conference speaking and entering awards will ensure you get noticed.
