The Lawyer journalist joins the Kelso PR team

The Kelso Consulting team has been joined by Katy Dowell, previously a senior journalist on the leading legal weekly magazine The Lawyer, as our Features Manager.

Katy is a highly experienced business journalist having previously worked on two of Britain’s top legal and insurance business magazines - The Lawyer and Insurance Times.

Katy first worked at The Lawyer as a senior reporter focused on litigation, then as news editor with overall responsibility for the scores of legal sector stories it publishes each week.

  This enables her to bring a powerful depth of experience and contacts in the legal and also insurance sectors for the benefit of our clients.

During her eight years at The Lawyer, Katy interviewed thousands of law firm partners and barristers (no exaggeration!), and has written about just about every significant law firm in England and Wales.

As well as writing news stories and feature articles, Katy was responsible for project managing the magazine’s annual Top 20 Cases rankings and helping to deliver The Lawyer UK200 (the definitive annual listing of the UK’s biggest law firms). She was also, for seven years, a judge for its prestigious The Lawyer Awards.

Katy's role as Features Manager supporting our clients starts with the initial stages of devising interesting ideas for articles and gaining commissions with target publications. This continues through to ghost-writing articles to a high quality and arranging the required approvals. 

Katy began her City career at Insurance Times, particularly focusing on the commercial insurance broker market and legal expenses sector. While there she was also an active freelance writer for such publications as The Observer, the Chartered Insurance Institute’s in-house magazine The Journal, and British Insurance Brokers’ Magazine The Broker.

Her recent professional Public Relations experience includes working with a Top 10 UK law firm, helping it to achieve industry awards and shape its ongoing marketing campaign, and also acting as the communications manager for litigation finance broker TheJudge.

Katy said: “Over the years I’ve received thousands of calls from PR people and hundreds of meetings.  As a result I have been on the receiving end of thousands of story pitches… so I certainly have experienced the good and the not-so-good when it comes to attempts to influence the media! 

"Getting in the media needn’t be difficult if you put the effort into having something interesting to say… that is, something interesting to other people!

“Understanding your audience and knowing your subject well enough to be quizzed on it will help you get noticed.  Developing and maintaining a strong and trustworthy relations with the press will only enhance the profile of your business in the media.  Ultimately such press relationships are a hugely valuable asset for a firm.
