Getting your business off the ground by building  & using your network

Kelso Consulting's Tim Prizeman is quoted in a recent article for RBS's banking clients full of tips on getting your business off the ground... an area where we have plenty of experience from working with start-ups and scale-ups over the past 20 years.

As we all know, it is both what you know and who you know that matter, and being able to mobilise this for your benefit.  In it Tim advises: 

 

“For any type of business, your network of contacts is a huge resource of help, advice, advocates, supporters, introductions and customers.  The key thing for asking for advice is not to appear needy.  Ask for specific help, with a mixture of flattery and confidence, and start small and work up to a big request later. 

“One starting point is approaching useful business owners you know, or at least have some connection, with a request along the lines of “I admire what you are doing with your business and I’d really appreciate getting your insights to help with the business I am creating.  Can I get your advice over a quick coffee later this month?”.

“Who would turn this down… and it opens the door to bigger help requests at a later date.”
